I never thought I'd teach yoga online...

I'm seven weeks into an epic road trip throughout California and Utah. While on the road, I've filmed yoga videos, run monthly Yin Hour livestreams, and awarded yoga teaching certificates to a new group of grads from my Yin Yoga Teacher Training - all while visiting national parks and going on stunning hikes every day.
It's a pretty normal month in my life.
I never thought I'd teach yoga online...
After 20 years teaching yoga in studios, I now teach entirely online - filming classes in places like Maui and Death Valley. I teach live classes through my yoga membership, and yogis from all over the world practice with me through my on-demand classes and courses… even while I sleep.
Every day, I’m grateful for this life I’ve created. But it wasn’t easy getting here.
For those twenty years I did the full-time yoga teacher shuffle. I even owned my own studio for a decade. The workload was intense, competition was fierce, and I had very little freedom to take time off.
At a certain point, I started wondering:
Was the yoga market just saturated?
Had I made a mistake choosing this as a career?
I'd seen how studio rents were going up and classes were becoming less affordable. In studios, I mostly saw well-to-do folks with extra time on their hands. The stressed-out people who needed yoga the most - parents, working-class people - were rarely present anymore.
But the yoga world had been quietly changing.
I’d never paid much attention to the world of online yoga. I assumed it was inauthentic. But once COVID and lockdowns forced me to open my eyes to it, I realized: it wasn’t.
Online yoga was more affordable, and that's where people were going. Yoga memberships and courses had been thriving online for years. When I started practicing with some online teachers, I quickly got over my hang-ups about authenticity. I realized at-home yogis were actually better able to care for themselves. No commuting. No expensive class passes. No comparing themselves to others in the room. When we practice at home, we’re actually in self-care mode.
How I pivoted.
I got my feet wet by teaching some Zoom classes. Though I was clunky with the tech, it quickly became clear to me - this was where I belonged. As a soft-spoken teacher specializing in Yin Yoga, I loved not having to speak loudly in a large room. With a wearable mic, I could speak softly and gently - in a way that felt far more natural for my teaching style.
It took a while to figure out my filming gear - which is something I'm often asked about by yoga teachers who want to start teaching online. If you think you need expensive gear to film yoga videos, think again! On my Tried & True Gear page I share the simple tools I use - like my favorite microphone and my iPhone camera.
Fast-forward to today, I've moved all my classes and courses online. What made this transition possible is Kajabi - the platform that hosts my teacher training, my website, my email list, and our online community.

Every day, I’m reminded how lucky I am to do this work in a way that feels sustainable.
I hope my story reminds you that it's never too late to make a change. When we follow what feels aligned, the path has a way of opening up.
